So my kids were at Whitman until we moved OOS where everything changed for them. They went from being the middle of the road to the top of the class. And this is what you need to do, to sustain and promote your HS kids in the direction of top colleges wherever you live: Take an AP level class and test in at least 1 of each of the big sciences (Bio / Chem / Physics), in a foreign language (or 2 languages), in lang, lit, and every single social studies / humanities course on offer -so in terms of History, Euro, Us, and World as well as Econ, Gov, Psychology and Sociology (if offered). Get Math APs in the highest classes offered at your school. Take the SAT in Junior year and again Senior year. Everyone else in your kids school is taking it, TO is not an option for you. Do as many SSL hours as possible and concentrate on 1 or 2 charities /sectors. Play an unusual instrumetn to an advanced level and get a certificate qualifying that talent Do a sport. Travel somewhere interseting - Japan, Botstwana etc Have teachers who genuinely back you. Have confidence in your skills.
Newsflash, not everyone can afford to travel and not all schools offer a lot of AP's. Our school has zero science AP's. Nor do kids have time to volunteer with sports and music. Just playing an instrument is fine but you need to be at an advanced level. Not sure what a certificate is. Never heard of that. Did you pay for that too?
