Everyone wants there to be some new and enlightening answer to this question. They are like this because they are uninformed, uncurious, and anti-intellectual. They believe it won't affect them, only people who "deserve" it, using whatever sexist, classist, racist, ableist reason they've come up with to justify excusing harm done to others.
