Sometimes because they were able to add in a WISC score (this test must be proctored one-on-one by a trained psychologist, so it is both more expensive but also more accurate than the simple computer-based exams done by all FCPS schools). Sometimes it's just because the same kid's application in front of one committee gets rejected, but getting it in front of a second committee gets them in. Sometimes more robust work samples help give a better picture of a child's full potential. Sometimes a spring iReady shows massive improvement that helps make the case for a kid on the right trajectory. It's not a very transparent process, but yes, appeals do work. I can't tell you any rates of success of course. I am sure a lot of them do come off as just upset parents complaining that their kids didn't get it. But it's not a waste of time by any means and does have some real validity to this process. [/quote]
