My bet is that a lot of Republicans and a lot of moderate pro-lifers will sign this, and a lot of Republican legislators will find that the petition, and the election, will give them the guts to follow their own instincts rather than be pushed around by the most extreme element in the party.
I'd like to think you're right, but it seems overly optimistic. There are still moderate Republicans, but most of them have not been able to realize or accept that there is no place for them in the current Republican Party. Based on the voodoo that the Republicans believed (no, really, just for giggles, let's all revisit the threads with all those trash talking R's from a few short weeks ago "Romney is gong to pummel Obummer! 538 electoral votes for Romney!") even the hard core wing nuts can't see their growing marginalization. And truly, they don't see women or women's lives as important. I'm the above PP who hopes never to need an abortion. I really chafe at the idea that the women who have abortions do so as birth control or because they're selfish or sluts or stupid or ill informed or being conned by a guy... I'm sick of anti-choicers spouting nonsense.
One can only assume that you are immature. I know I was anti choice for about ten minutes as a tween, and then I realized that life isn't platitudes and cardboard cutouts.
That's it? That is your counter? I'm not the poster to whom you are responding, but if you assume that people who disagree with you on this issue are immature, then you are just ignorant. Yeah, I just called you ignorant. That term doesn't necessarily apply to the entire Choice crowd, but it certainly does to you. This will be a shock to you, since life isn't "platitudes and cardboard cutouts", but for lots of us in the world there are actually some moral absolutes. Many of us see some things as objectively good and objectively evil. Unfortunately people like you want to paint us a crazies. Tons of us come to this viewpoint after much thoughtful, considered philosophical thinking. Apparently it is impossible for someone like you to disagree with us without demeaning our ability to reason. To you we are thoughtfully "immature". I shouldn't have even responded to you because there is little chance of a discussion on this, but this goofy little slur from you just made me want to let you know that your post is pretty dumb.
You must be having a rough day. Reread the post I responded to, which I read as that PP saying that s/he pretty much thinks that women who have abortions are sluts, stupid, ill-informed, etc. If that's what s/he thinks, then yes, that's pretty immature. Beyond insulting me, several times no less! you don't really make any points. Seeing things as objectively good and objectively evil is a hallmark of immature thinking. I've said it before and I'll say it again: really, really spin out for me a world in which abortion is illegal. Tell me what happens in this world to women who want babies but are carrying a fetus incompatible with life. Tell me about the unwanted children. What becomes of them? Are they all adopted to loving happy families? How many birth mothers decide against placing their children for adoption? Who helps pay for this. Tell me how, since a majority of anti-choicers are religious, and beyond their beliefs, no one can pinpoint the moment of ensoulment, and how making abortion illegal trounces on my right to practice my religion? How would you fix the fact that there are anti choice "crazies" who actively work to make birth control more difficult to obtain or illegal - as this Republican douchebag's little personhood amendment might have the result of yet also demonize abortion? Will we jail women who've had miscarriages until you can prove otherwise? Will women who have glad abortions be jailed? Will we begin awarding SSN at conception? Bonus points for proving you've studied the history of abortion, human rights, and women's rights in countries that have outlawed abortion, especially Romania. Do I stand outside OB's office and pleas with the ladies to get abortions? No. Do anti choicers stand outside Planned Parenthood and harass, threaten and bomb? Yes, yes they do. No one loves abortion, but I'm a grown up. It's like trying to stop the weather.
