What's the cause
"Portuguese energy company REN suggested that "due to extreme temperature variations in the interior of Spain, there were anomalous oscillations in the very high voltage lines (400 KV), a phenomenon known as 'induced atmospheric vibration,'" according to a BBC.com report." https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2025/04/28/power-outage-europe-atmosphere-cause/83330424007/
I work in energy policy and none of the experts I know believe this. I'm not trying to promote a conspiracy theory, but it's more likely that it was a relatively normal problem on the grid. Whether it was this or something else, the system should have been able to withstand it. The fact that they were running on 78% wind and solar with almost no "spinning reserves" made the grid particularly unstable due to a lack of inertia in the system and whatever the failure was created a series of cascading outages.
I could believe it. Minor system disturbances have caused major issues here as well. If you donโt program the computers running wind and solar to stay online theyโll trip.
