I find the sugar is essential to helping me eat a healthy diet. Lots of healthy foods don't taste that good. Sugar makes them taste better. So does salt, and heat spices. Also fat, but unlike sugar and seasoning, fat is actually essential to a healthy diet -- your body needs some amount of fat. So sugar in a food with no other beneficial ingredients is unhealthy (like the sugar in Doritos, or candy). But like for breakfast this morning, I had a greek yogurt with granola, chia seeds, and mango. The mango has some sugar in it and helps sweeten the whole thing up, but you know what really helps? a couple teaspoons of honey. So I add honey and it makes the whole thing taste delicious and I actually look forward to it. Some days I make green kale smoothies for breakfast or lunch, and I have to add fruit and honey to these to make them palatable. But the smoothies are still very healthy. Some people don't like sweet, but then they have this same issue with salt or other seasoning. It is extremely hard to eat a healthy diet without including some amount of sugar and salt (I used both), so it's better to just find ways to incorporate these ingredients in moderation while ensuring the rest of your diet is mostly highly nutritious ingredients. Mary Poppins was right!
