Someone I know will be putting their dog down this week due to advanced cancer. The dog ended up having a good amount of time after dx with surgery and treatment, but the cancer returned and has spread- breathing and walking are not possible now as of last week. They know they have to, and it's scheduled as I write this. Sadly, this dog was this person's whole life for a decade- through sad, serious life events that happened followed by years of isolation in Covid, and though things are so much better now, that dog is still a big part of life. They were a bonded pair, hardly ever without each other, and it is devastating. The dog was like a child to this person. Now I am worried about afterward. I seriously think this will not be a something that will just be adjusted to. Just thinking of the dog not being there makes even me sob, it's really sad. Without the cancer, this dog would have probably had about 3 more years at best and eventually would've died, but how can I support this person now? This person has said "There will never be another dog for me. My heart is going with him, I don't think I'll recover from this, or at least not for a long time." I've also thought that about my dogs,I suffered, but there was always another dog to love, I found. Now is definitely not right to consider that, but maybe later I hope. But, for now, would a grief therapist help? People laugh at this and think it's just a dog. It was never just a dog here, believe me. This dog was magic- as they all are.
