my elementary school age child has combined adhd. He has classic difficulty focusing, gets overstimulated and hyper, and also has difficulty with emotional regulation. stimulant trials (focalin, methylphenidate IR & ER, vyvanse) have been a mixed bag for him - lots of emotional highs and lows that seem to be exacerbated by stimulants and their crashes upon wearing off. He is also on prozac for his anxiety. He was previously on guanfacine ER for awhile, which didn't seem to help anything, so his doctor recently switched that out for clonidine. Doctor wants to try removing the stimulant for awhile to see how DS does on prozac + clonidine combo. I am more than happy to do this at home, but am nervous about school where DS might really struggle with his hyperactivity and getting overstimulated without the stimulant. Has anyone's child had success with clonidine, with or without a stimulant? How long does it take to have full therapeutic effect? I haven't noticed any side effects of the clonidine so far - i haven't noticed any changes in his sleep. Maybe my son is a little more emotionally calm, but we're also on spring break and he has very few demands on him. Could it be working without side effects? Curious to hear about other's experience with clonidine.
