It was difficult to explain why a few friends were leaving (and she wasn't), we tried to emphasize that third grade is a big year with many chances for advancement even at the local, non-center school for smart kids.  That advice seemed to pay off; DC was very motivated to work on math skills over the summer to try and get accepted to advanced math and has seemed to enjoy that class.

If your child is not accepted, it will be a tough few days--but mainly for you.  Try to stay positive with your kid until they come to you asking questions about friends.
