The bigger worry right now is if the House doesn't vote to restore DC's right to spend it's own approved budget. There is a 16% cut of funds (over $350 million for DCPS and for charters) that must be cut this fiscal year. That's from now through September 30. Schools are being told to budget for a worst case scenario that includes cutting $3,500 per kid this year, budgeting the upcoming school year (SY26) on SY24 levels and eliminating federal grants like title and IDEA in their budgets. I think schools will see some title and IDEA funds but who knows what the requirements will be or whether schools will receive the same or a reduced amount.
Title 1 and IDEA are funded by feds. It will be the 1st to go if there are cuts. DC is saying to plan to cut these funds and core academic funding of $3500 for each student meaning there are no extra funds for extra stuff. DCPS and charters will all be affected. But charters with good, positive financial balance sheets will do better and DCPS schools with strong PTO fundraising groups that can help make up some of the losses will do better.
