Rumor has it algebra in 7th grade is going to be open enrollment next year, so don't stress.
Uh... what? I doubt that.
I'm a middle school algebra teacher and it's what we were told.
Wow, that is insane and so bad for long term outcomes and interest in math.
But the only metric anyone in central office cares about lately is the % of kids taking algebra by 8th grade. That's literally it. Every meeting I've sat in during this school year is about how we need to get all kids into algebra in middle school. This opens it up. No one is measuring the % of kids who stop taking math by senior year because they are burnt out, or who go from honors or advanced math in middle school to "check a box that says i have a math class" math by 11th grade because they don't like it. It's going to be a scheduling nightmare when kids drop algebra 1 after 1st quarter and have nowhere to go, because there are only a handful of prealgebra classes and they're all full. And the prealgebra curriculum does equations and functions in first quarter, so if algebra goes over their head and they drop, they've missed the foundations in the prealgebra course too. Not excited for next year.
