You cannot drive directly from Virginia Beach to OBX (such as Corolla) because at the VA/NC border there is a large Virginia state park that you cannot drive through or even in. So to get to the OBX from Virginia Beach you literally need to drive to Duck across the bridge like everyone else. There is plenty to do in Virginia Beach. If you want a large house like the OBX then stay in Sandbride. The other nice area is in the north end to rent a house. Weekly rentals are expensive there in the summer, just like in other beaches.
