In Midlothian, Hampton Inn Richmond-Midlothian Turnpike seems nice enough (next to Target and lots of fast food/across from a shopping center). They do sometimes have a side door that won't latch so non-guests could get in. Very nice staff last time I was there.

Never felt unsafe at Holiday Inn Express Richmond E - Midlothian Trnpke 8710 Midlothian Turnpike, but the rooms are dusty and old (hence why I chose the prior Hampton Inn again).

Holiday Inn Express Richmond North Ashland
107 South Carter Road also had nice staff. It's very close to the interstate so kind of a bit isolated but didn't feel unsafe. Just stayed there last month with one kid.

Hampton Inn & Suites Richmond/Virginia Center, I've stayed at 2 years ago and would have chosen recently except I prefer Holiday Inn Express breakfast. I think the area is safe and it's also near a Target, but apparently it may be undergoing some almost-complete (?) renovations which could be good or bad for you depending....

Candlewood Suites Richmond South booked last minute 2 years ago. It was basic and old/dusty inside and probably try the Best Western if I was on that side of town again because it looked newer. It's also right next to Altria or what we Philip Morris is called now.
