The allocations aren’t by department- they are based on school enrollment and 7 periods per day. Plus extra heads for various release periods. It’s up to the principals to allocate according to course selection, but they can adjust that based on desired balance among departments. For example, our HS has a popular science elective that they limit the number of sections for (e.g. only 5 instead of 8) to force kids to take electives in other departments.

I wouldn’t say it’s “shady”, because those types of decisions are the prerogative, but most of the time it’s not transparent. I don’t think it really can be because everyone would have different opinions about school priorities. But hopefully there are competent APs involved and the school at least makes it clear what some of the major guidelines shaping staffing are in any given year.[/quote]
