We leave puppy pads out b/c he has housetraining issues.
A, he doesn't have housetraining issues; you do. B, using puppy pads is only going to contribute to the problem. He's either allowed to shit in the house or he's not. You're confusing him. Four poops a day is excessive. Feed the dogs separately, and DON'T FREE-FEED. You need to know exactly what and how much each one is eating. Also, putting them on a grain-free, high-quality food will cut down on the amount of poop because the dog's body will process it better and there's less filler. Go for a 4- or 5-star brand from this list: http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-reviews/dry/ You need to get the housetraining under control, which means using a crate when you can't supervise him, taking him out regularly (every couple hours and after every nap, play session, and meal), swooping him up and immediately running outside if you catch him in the act (even if he's already relieved himself), teaching him to use a bell on the door to tell you he has to go out, and giving SO MUCH PRAISE and little treats EVERY TIME he relieves himself outside. Every time. NEVER scold or hit the dog for going in the house. You'll only teach him to hide it from you next time. But here's the bad news. Some dogs just eat their poo forever, especially hounds. What breed is yours? Most dogs grow out of it, but mine hasn't (he's 4). His beagle nose just smells too many delectable things in it, and he's so food-motivated he eats anything and everything. People will tell you it means his diet is deficient in some way. That might be the case, but it's definitely not the case for my dog. He's on the highest-quality food there is. I've tried adding pineapple to his food. It didn't work. He just likes to eat shit. And pinecones. And rope. And paper towels. And used Q-tips -- oh, those are the best. We just prevent it. He's NEVER unsupervised outside. We stand next to him with a baggie every.single.time. Unfortunately, it also means we had to stop taking him to daycare and the dog park. He'd eat shit and come home sick every time. So now we just do playdates with people who know the drill and clean up their yard before we come over. :)
My dog is also a beagle. He is on a grain free, high quality food already. Natural Balance Duck and Potato. We do not free feed-- are you kidding me? Can people actually DO THAT? He eats 1/3 of a cup twice a day with a little water on it. He just went to vet and is healthy, no issues so don't know why he poops so much. Ok so if i dont use the puppy pads, the alternative is to keep him crated all day and only let out twice a day? Is that acceptable?
