Am seeking advice from those who have navigated the 9th grade magnet application process, and or a mix of private/public applications before. DC has been assigned to our home school via the DCC choice process. We've also applied to a few magnets and a few privates. We're trying to make sure we listen to DC and provide as much autonomy as possible. But we're near the end of this process and have come to vastly different conclusions than he has. Our easy going kid has suddenly developed some strong opinions. He was initially excited about graduating his small private and starting at his large home school until he attended one of the private school shadow days. We didn't expect the different processes for private and public to play out this way--he hasn't actually seen his home school during the school day yet, as that occurs after magnet acceptance. So, he's comparing the MCPS open houses, football games, etc., with the shadow day he had. He's also forgotten about all of the MCPS math and science opportunities he was excited about before, and now seems solely focused on the social "vibe" at the other school. We (parents) are thrilled with the math and science options of our home school (and magnet if we get that lucky). I guess if he doesn't get accepted at the private he's fixated on, he may open his mind more. Also, if we don't get aid, it's a non-starter. But, am wondering about the various possibilities for approaches on discussing this as we close in on decisions. If we just put our foot down and tell him he's going to the school we chose, he'll likely shut down and be miserable. If you've navigated big differences in school choice, would love to know how you approached it and/or how things turned out.
