My son is a freshman. We toured in the summer.  The tour is fine but I think you can learn a lot more walking around Ann Arbor and checking things out for yourself.  The tour will take you to a model dorm room which is a very ordinary room.  That's pretty much the only thing you can't do on your own.  Except maybe you wouldn't be nervy enough to go into the Collegiate Gothic Law Library reading room (it's Harry Potteresque).

If you post the dates of your trip, and mention what you're interested in, you could get some specific suggestions for making your trip more insightful.  I answered a few posts like that last year.

It's helpful to have your DC's name recorded as a visitor for "demonstrated interest" purposes but demonstrating interest can also happen without coming to campus (to be fair to all).  Request materials by e-mail, attend webinars, etc.  I mention this in case you can't find an official tour that matches your schedule.  You can still learn a lot of what you want to know without an official tour.

After the tour, there's still admitted student's weekend and then orientation if you matriculate.  These overlap a bit in terms of showing the students around.

Also keep in mind the University's spring break is the first week of March.[/quote]
