If it's 16 degrees outside over night the wine will freeze overnight and the bottles can explode. The less time in a very cold car the better. The day time is way less risk because the sun warms the car, and if you're driving, inside will be warm too. So pack them into the car in the morning. Wrap towels around them and place them in a box alone, just in case, but you should be fine if it's cold out but the wine is inside the car with you for most of the time.
I can definitely do the AM instead. He doesn't know what's in it (wrapped) so I didn't want to ruin the surprise, and I definitely don't want 5 bottles of exploded red wine all over the car! If it's ok in the car during the day, I think that will be the plan. He does park outside, but in the sun (please be sunny tmr), black car, and will be warm from the ~30-40m drive.
