You do not need to fly to Sonoma or Napa. I don't even think you can from Monterey/Carmel unless you have a private plane. With traffic (and there is traffic) it will take you about 4ish hours from Carmel to either spot.

Definitely need to know your budget and preference on wine:

Sonoma/Healdsburg (more chill)
Wines: more pinots, lighter whites
High Budget: Montage, Farmhouse Inn (a little away from dt Healdsburg, but very lovely), 
Low(er) Budget: any of the Piazza hotels- Hotel Healdburg, H2, etc. 
Boutique hotels that are supposed to be really nice: Madrona (have brunch there), Single Thread (the restaurant!!), Hotel Les Mar (we stayed for a night-very cute and European feel).

Napa (busier, but popular for a reason)
Wines: chards and cabs
High Budget: Auberge (adults only-- highly recommend), Solage, Meadowood (can have a lot of kids), Bardossono
Low(er) Budget: Napa is overall pricey, but there are a few properties in dt Napa that are decent including the Westin (can have a lot of kids).

Thank you so much! Sorry I should have been clear about flying, I meant that we have some flexibility with flights. We can fly into San Jose and out of SF or whatever makes the most sense. [/quote]
