Near your hotel, try Pressed for breakfast. Wander down Newbury Street to browse shops and restaurants. Trident Booksellers and Cafe is fun. I had great Mexican drinks and appetizers just last week with my Boston college student at Sabina Mezcaleria on Newbury. Take a walk in the Fens. Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. And definitely cannolis at Mike’s! There’s one in Cambridge as well as the one in the (always mobbed) North End.
There's one at TD Garden, as well. No line at all when we were there. I also like Regina Pizzeria in the North End if you're heading that way for cannoli. As far as things to do...Newbury Street, walking the Freedom Trail (my kid is a history buff), Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, heading out to Cambridge (Harvard Yard was just ok, but Mr. Bartley's served the best burger I've ever eaten!), spending time on Boston Common and in the Public Garden (the Make Way for Ducklings sculpture is a favorite of mine, especially if the ducks are dressed up for a holiday/event/etc.).
