I didn't ask. Maybe the plane fares are less expensive and they were trying to make it more affordable for their out of country guests? They both hail from Mediterranean countries, if that helps with what guests might be wearing. Of course there will also be lots of DC-area guests, so I am probably overthinking that aspect.

It seems to me you have pretty much got it -- finding the in-between actually isn't that hard.  Tuckernuck has an "elevated day" section. Look through it for ideas to start. Some of it is too casual, but there is lots there that could work, depending on body type. And if it's too stuffy for you, just get an idea of what might be appropriate for afternoon and search other sites you like more.

Alternatively you could make an appointment to see a stylist at Nordstrom, especially if you have a big budget -- but I did that once and didn't have great luck with it.

People who look really elevated/rich/etc often look that way not only because of their clothing, but their grooming. Bear that in mind. Make sure your hair/makeup/nails/eyebrows/etc is on point. Also, styling -- the clothes matter, but the styling (shoes, jewelry, bag, hair etc) are what makes it work. [/quote]
