From my weather discussion board: "I don’t think many people from outside the area here fully appreciate the situation we find ourselves in here around the shore areas of Tampa Bay there’s literally piles ten feet high of debris , discarded furniture, appliances and miscellaneous crap up and down the coast for miles and miles. I doubt much of it will be picked up by the time the rains hit. Any surge or even just heavy rains in this area will push that stuff into houses and cars and create tremendous hazards for anyone caught in the flood path. if we get cane strength winds ahead of the flooding then all those items will also go flying. I mean you couldn’t script a more damaging scenario if you tried. i also failed to mention how all that crap by the side of the roads will certainly clog up our storm drains in short order. A mild surge can then turn into a major flood even in areas that don’t normally flood."
That person is probably correct that we don't entirely see the situation or understand it. Many of us also don't understanding living so close to water. At some point, one has to use logic and see that living in flood zones is not a good idea. I'm not talking about people too poor to move or those stuck in mobile home parks, which should not be allowed to be built in flood zones. You know someone bought cheap land and said "let's put the poors here" -- in a mobile home that will fall apart in the first hurricane...That should not be legal to do. I understand that Asheville and mountain areas could not predict the mudslides and other ramifications of 30 inches of rain, and I am not talking about them. We'd all be wise to understand a catastrophe could strike any of our homes, and we will hopefully have at least three days of water and food stored away. If you live in a rural area, you should have a week or more of food and water stored for emergencies.
