Always. Not just taupe. De-saturating any color will have that effect. So people will tend to read them in the low-energy spectrum. It also depends on YOUR energy, as well as the rest of your outfit. If you tend to have a quiet personality, and you walk around dressed in muted tones... you're basically going to be invisible. If you're perkier, or you pair a quiet taupe bag with an outfit anchored by a more vibrant piece... then the effect is more balanced.

People often don't think about how their entire look and behavior (clothes, walk, posture, smile, eye contact), before any sort of greeting is given, already pegs them into an unconscious category in the eyes of others. Humans are just extremely visual. It pays off to remember that, instead of buying whatever looks good in the store or on the website. The models they're on might not have your coloring, and they're wearing carefully curated outfits that you don't necessarily own.
