When these things happen I always want to know if they are gang/drugs related or whether it’s an interpersonal dispute (eg, stole my girlfriend, etc.). They are both troubling but have totally different causes and solutions. Also would like to know if the weapon is one he took from a parent, or self assembled ghost gun, or bought on illegal market.
Either way a high school student has been arrested for attempted murder. How would you feel if this happened at your school? Or, is it simply NBD because it was at Northwest?
Certainly it’s a big deal. But if this is an interpersonal beef where a kid stole his dad’s gun, things like more sociopolitical support and education to parents about locking up their guns, etc., might be helpful. Gang violence is totally different — different causes, different solutions. At some point last year I was looking through the missing teen postings from McPD after a teen from my kid’s school went missing. It was shocking how many were Latino, and it made me wonder how much of it was MS13 related — like gangs luring young teens away as a recruitment tool or to traffic girls.
This is an issue that our local political leaders need to address, but have summarily ignored. The increase in MS13 activity is directly related to the fact that our local politicians have encouraged unlimited undocumented immigrants into this county. And, this is a huge safety concern that is now affecting our schools. My Latin American neighbors (who came here legally) were so concerned about their daughters' safety in MCPS that they switched over to Catholic school.
