how much do you pay for the beforecare/aftercare programs for your elementary school?? and would you recommend them?? or do you think a nanny is a better option for a kindergartener?
The cost and convenience depends on the school. Wyngate does not offer before/aftercare on site so you are dependent on one of the four programs that buses there (MCCA Ashburton/Wyngate, YMCA-Arylawn, Bethesda Country day, and Executive Childcare Center). You are looking at $600/month or higher for before and after care. It's also difficult to have your child participate in extra enrichment offered at the school like Mad Science, FLES (foreign language), Think Math, etc, unless someone can do a 4:30-4:40 pickup. You also have to consider homework getting done and how it is handled at aftercare. For us, when the kids get to upper elementary we think we would prefer to get someone to watch them ...they will have more homework, they are more involved in activities, they have established friends (unlike in kindergarten when they are just getting to know everyone and aftercare extends the social time) and probably when you look at the cost for two kids it would make sense. The only downside will be covering the days school is closed (Spring Break, Yom Kippur, Teacher work days) or early departure that are currently covered by aftercare. Anyway, Asburton has aftercare onsite (I don't know the cost) so your child can participate in enrichment programs offered at the school and several of the programs serving Wyngate kids also bus to Ashburton. Bethesda Elementary is a pickup point for an aftercare program through Montgomery County Parks and Rec that is extremely affordable. However, the aftercare location is in The Rosemary Hills are of Silver Spring which might not be a convenient location.
