I am writing to inform you about a serious incident that occurred today,
during which MCPS security successfully intervened to confiscate a loaded
handgun from one of our students.

At approximately 10:00 am, a teacher reported seeing what appeared to be a
student with a weapon in his waistband to security personnel.  The student
was escorted out of the classroom to conduct a self-search. A loaded
firearm was found with ammunition that did not match the weapon.  The
student was detained, and school leaders immediately notified the
Montgomery County Police Community Engagement Officer (CEO), the MCPS
Office of Systemwide Safety and Emergency Management (OSSEM), and the MCPS Office of School Support and Well-being.

There was no disruption to the school day as the Montgomery County Police
Department arrived to confiscate the weapon, arrest the juvenile student,
and transport the student from campus. It is important to note that throughout this incident, our staff remained vigilant and dedicated to ensuring the safety of all students and staff in the building.

What occurred today is an extremely serious matter, and I am requesting
that you take a moment with your child to reinforce the seriousness of bringing anything to school that could be considered a weapon. Weapons of
any kind may not be brought to school, and students are subjected to
serious disciplinary actions in alignment with the MCPS Student Code of
Conduct &lt;https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/students/rights/&gt; and potentially in violation of the law, as is the case today for this incident.

I understand news about a firearm in school can be unsettling. Our school counselors and support staff will be available to offer any assistance or guidance your child may need.
