DS got accepted in the UVA transfer and wishes to apply for medical schools later in the process. Need help to decide if he should stay in UMD or move to UVA. Looking for more information on premed opportunities in research/clinical research at UVA and the attached hospital. How hard it is to keep the grades up in UVA. And if there is a real repute difference between to two to make a difference in Med school acceptance. He volunteers at local Fairfax hospitals and has a couple of research opportunities in UMD BC for which he has to commute. The cost difference is 10k per year with UVA being cheaper for us.
UVA is ticked off at a higher tier than UMD, per med school admissions committees. UVA is "Tier 2" below Ivy/+ schools and Amherst, Williams, Swarthmore. UMD is the tier below. Undergrad is a small but meaningful factor in med admissions. They need to study hard and get highest grades possible once they transfer.
Pure curiosity on my part. How do you know that? Is there an official list, or is that guess based on some undergrad ranking like usnews? I have no dog in this fight, as my kid is not pre-med.
