High school soccer is pretty terrible style of play. It is like a bunch of long ball boots all game.
These comments always crack me up. Where do you think these HS players come from? Have you watched travel games. MOST are the same thing. Very few travel teams play with patience. Watch a NCDL D1 game. Horrendous soccer. Watch EDP. Horrendous except for the top teams in the top divisions. HS doesn't make these players bad...they are just bad players playing HS. It's just not possible to have a HS team of all ECNL/MLS/GA players. Of course, not all of these players are perfect but the difference between these players and most other travel players is quite large. As to the OP's question, the roster size and subbing is up to the coach. Some coaches just don't like to cut players so they'll carry a large roster and tell some kids...you will not see the field and the kids are OK with that because they just want to be on the team and represent their school and do bus rides and be part of something...maybe for resume building, who knows? Most teams I've seen will play 15-18 kids; however, I'm not surprised that there are a few coaches that will only play 12-13 basically to sub in for yellow cards depending on which position is being replaced.
I've watched a lot of club games and most of those teams will out play a HS team if you take away size and speed. IQ is low from the coaches and players. What I have observed is that they play the "top" players (i.e. high level club players) in positions that isn't there normal positions because HS coaches think a soccer player is a soccer player. There is no building, just boot and scoring is a result of a break away. I don't talk to other parents because for some, HS is the pinnacle of their soccer experience and I don't want to rain on their parade.
