A plumber yesterday told me they charge $420 per hour. I was shocked inflation drove plumbing service to $420 per hour! Now how many college majors offer $420 per hour, even ten years post-graduation? And the icing on the cake is AI will not replace residential plumbing maintenance jobs!
Plumbers don’t cost anything close to that in Bethesda. I just had one install a toilet and vanity which took about 3 hours and it was $500. Actually, AI may at least start impacting certain aspects of trades. A/C units are now coming with sensors that provide diagnostics so you will know months in advance if your system is encountering problems and will reduce the need for annual servicing and emergency situations. There are similar sensors on water pipes installed in commercial buildings to alert to small leaks and pressure building in pipes are more easily fixed vs the big pipe bursts. You will still need plumbers and HVAC folks…but not as many.
