My elementary school will take the kids outside to watch and will provide those paper disposable eclipse glasses but I am a little worried about trusting my public school to effectively prevent the kids from damaging their eyesight. Will small kids in K and first grade actually keep their glasses on properly the whole time without constant supervision? Should I pick my kid up to watch with me just to be safe?
I have taught k and 1st and I would not feel confident that every child would keep the glasses on for the entire time. There are just too many of them and not enough of me to feel comfortable.
But they can be outside without glasses. They just can't stare at the sun and there are a million other ways to observe the eclipse without staring at the sun. I don't really think it's as big of deal as folks are making it. We have had eclipses since the dawn of time and don't have a huge amount of the population with eye damage.
