So far the tradeoffs have been worth it.  Our oldest child was raised birth to 17 in this house.  We are almost to downsize mode now.  Our kids even wanted to keep sharing a bedroom so we never had to disassemble our guest bedroom/upstairs office.  And we avoided having a lot of house chores over the years.
