Why anybody would want to sit next to a 4 year old by themselves is beyond me. Older kids could theoretically sit by themselves but won’t really like it.

I feel like it is just a lawsuit waiting to happen if a young girl gets assaulted on a flight because they couldn’t sit next to their parent. I have a friend who was sexually assaulted on an over night flight. But of course airlines are only interested in making more money. [/quote]

You are ignoring the advice in this thread. So let me spell it out since you have no idea what you are doing:

Step 1: are they basic economy tickets? If yes and it’s within 24 hours, cancel and rebook regular economy so you can pick seats

Step 2: if not basic economy, call or chat with United. They’ll likely put you in premium seats (not economy plus) for free to keep you together. They also typically have rows blocked off that appear full but are open to agents.
