Your kids will get more out of Athens - especially if you can tour the Acropolis and the museums. I think of Santorini as more of an adult destination. Once you get past the view - which is spectacular - there's not much to do besides shopping and finding a decent restaurant to eat at where you again can enjoy the view.
+1. I went to both ports via a cruise around the age of 17. Athens is Grade A history, especially for kids who like mythology, Percy Jackson books, and history/political science. I found it moving to visit. I also liked seeing the many, many freighters anchored offshore from Piraeus. Santorini is a donkey ride opportunity (if they haven't stopped doing that), an interesting geological setting if someone explains the volcanic history, and a pretty view of a whitewashed village. I think I recall the streets near the edge of the hill being fun to look down (so nice walk). That's it. Yes, it might be a nice honeymoon spot...but I was a teen with my family.
