Is there some guidance about how much time should be between a due date and a deadline? My kid has a teacher that regularly makes the deadline a day or two after the due date, so if you accidentally miss the deadline, you're precluded from turning in the assignment at all. This seems to violate the spirit of the rule, but perhaps not the letter of the rule. Does anyone know?
In other words, your kid is planning to the deadline and not the due date? Appropriate deadlines vary based on the task. My usual structure is that deadlines are at least enough days so students with extended time fit that in before the deadline. For example a HW given with 2 days notice has a deadline the next day. If we spent four days in class working on a task, the deadline is at least 2 additional days. In reality, I use quizzes and tests as natural deadlines. It doesn’t help kids to let them build up a huge pile of unfinished work. Turn in what you have and move on.
