That's not even the right question. Whether or not Mitt paid no income tax b/c of an accumulation of net business losses during the downturn doesn't interest me. What interests me is how he transferred his fortune to his children without paying a cent in (much higher) gift taxes. Mitt is allegedly worth $260 million. Yet, the managing director at Bain, the guy who co-owns the Boston Celtics, is worth twice that. It doesn't compute. I think the older tax returns show evidence of nominal tax payments derived from a zeroed-out GRAT, which is the sort of shenanigan Mark Zuckerberg did with his Facebook shares. Of questionable legality
+1 People already assume that Mitt didn't pay income taxes so releasing them wouldn't necessarily do more damage if this was it. They don't want another story from his tax practices during the lead up to the recession. It would be likely that the practices (even if edgy but still technically legal) would be made analogous with the other abuses and excesses that led up to the financial collapse. Its one thing to be a tax cheat and quite another to be cast as an example of how corporate financial practices kicked off the recession.
