Stephanopoulos asked Pawlenty how many returns Romney asked HIM to provide during the vetting for VP. He fumbled around and said he did not recall. Priceless.
indeed. Now McCain saw Romney's returns when he was vetted for VP. If Harry Reid's claims are false, why hasn't McCain stepped forward to assert that Romney did indeed pay his taxes? He has been entirely silent on the matter.
That isn't true, actually. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/17/mitt-romney-tax-returns_n_1680765.html
McCain hasn't been silent, but he also refused to say whether there were years that Romney didn't pay taxes, even when directly asked.
That's not even the right question. Whether or not Mitt paid no income tax b/c of an accumulation of net business losses during the downturn doesn't interest me. What interests me is how he transferred his fortune to his children without paying a cent in (much higher) gift taxes. Mitt is allegedly worth $260 million. Yet, the managing director at Bain, the guy who co-owns the Boston Celtics, is worth twice that. It doesn't compute. I think the older tax returns show evidence of nominal tax payments derived from a zeroed-out GRAT, which is the sort of shenanigan Mark Zuckerberg did with his Facebook shares. Of questionable legality.
