When I watched the two Republican governors debate on the national stage in Iowa, I'm perplexed (as usual when it comes to politics), why is there no code of conduct regarding "respectful" communication? Why should DeSantis not lose points or something for calling Haley "mealy mouthed" or criticizing her "pastel" color choices? The purpose of the debate was to learn more about their similarities or differences on policies and actions, not who is better at middle school insults. I don't think it shows anything about how well a candidate is able to maintain their composure on stage while being insulted. Why not stage a psych-ops demo of something worse, to see which candidate handles the situation best? Why can't we demand better behavior at the podium? Lies are bad enough and easier to prove. What do we do with these insults? If you think this isn't sending a message, that this is how business between adults is conducted in the civilized Western world, think again.
DeSantis is an arrogant jerk and that shows clearly in an unscripted debate. The Trump vs Biden debates of 2020 were a complete embarrassment for the country. No way those two elderly men can handle a live, multi-hour unscripted debate in 2024 considering their brains have another four years of age on them.
