My child is a current sophomore taking Spanish 5 and is planning on taking AP Spanish next year, her junior year. But she needs room in her schedule for some stem classes (she plans on doing stem in college). Can my child skip Ap Spanish class and just take the seal of biliteracy test? Looking for advice from people who have prior experience or knowledge-in terms of which option is best?
The Seal of Biliteracy wouldn’t really do much except putting it on college apps. However, taking AP Spanish and the test would give college credit assuming your child scores high enough. Also you can automatically qualify for the seal of Biliteracy if you get a 4 or 5 on the AP test. My son just did AP Spanish last year and loved the class, he said it was very easy for him. He got a 4 on the test. In my opinion AP Spanish would be the better route.
NP. Does any one know what kind of college credit is given for ap Spanish at Umd college park, is foreign language a gen Ed requirement at the college? I searched but couldn’t find that info anywhere?
UMD gives AP spanish language as a lower level elective. It doesn’t fulfill any gen ed requirements. However getting a 5 on AP Spanish literature fulfills one of the humanities requirements. Here is the link to the information: https://www.transfercredit.umd.edu/plc/APGenEd.pdf
