I'm hoping that my kid will consider VCUArts given the school's reputation (for her desired program) and value. However, my kid thinks that she should go to a more "prestigious" school because of her high stats. She feels like she worked really hard to get a high GPA in all honors and AP classes and get a high test score (upper 1400s) - but if she went to VCU, she would feel like she didn't even need to work as hard as she did. Its not the best attitude, but I think a lot of people in her situation might feel the same way. Having said this, my kid still acknowledges that VCUArts has a solid reputation.
If she is pursuing an arts degree she should focus on the prestige of the VCUArts program and not VCU as a whole. Acceptance rate for arts is comparable to acceptance to prestigious universities. But, may not be the best for for your student. My DD was also accepted for Studio Art at Virginia Tech. Yes, VT higher ranked overall and offers a different campus atmosphere. But even VT art faculty acknowledged they would choose VCU art program over their own unless there was some compelling interest in VT or desire to get a lot of attention from Art faculty and/or be a big fish in a small art pond.
