I think it depends on the school. Our school makes an individual class for Advanced Math so it needs at least 16 kids. I would guess that they are looking for certain score on the SOL and iReady as well as in class performance. Ideally they are looking for kids who they think will be ready for Algebra in 7th grade.
No. Not even remotely true. They're looking for the kids who will be ready for Algebra by 8th grade. Even in AAP, a large chunk of the kids don't qualify for Algebra in 7th. Generally, they base their decisions on the kid's end of year test from the previous year, the beginning of year test from the current year, the SOL math score from the previous year, CogAT Q, iready math, and the opinion of the teacher from the previous grade. At my kids' school, they were looking for kids who were at least 110+ on CogAT Q, maybe a 480 on the SOL from the previous year, and had most metrics pointing to a solidly above average kid.
+1 This exactly. My daughter is currently in advanced math in 5th gen Ed. She’s been in since third. She did not make it into AAP Level 4. They do a beginning of the year math test each year to determine placement. They also look at SOL scores and back in second looked at CogAT. She is doing well in advanced math but I can tell she won’t be doing Algebra in 7th. They can’t tell now which kids would be ready to do Algebra in 7th anyway. That’s based on the IAAT which is in 6th and a combination of other factors.
