I developed this problem and it had to do with my thumb position entering the water on my right hand. I would stick my thumb out sideways. Paddles will help correct your hand position. The thumb was compensating for some weakness in my shoulder. Try to keep your thumb somewhat parallel to your hand instead of perpendicular.
THANK YOU for answering. Yes, it is on my right hand as well, and I thought it had to be some sort of positioning that I was doing poorly. Like positioning my hand a certain way while I pull through the water creating excess tension on the thumb joint. I don't know what paddles are! Do you keep your thumb tight to your hand when you pull through the stroke?
NP - yes, keep your thumb in to your hand all the way through the stroke. You can cup your hands very slightly - might help to think of your thumb as part of the cup. Perhaps too much information about paddles: https://www.yourswimlog.com/ultimate-guide-swim-paddles/
