Spend all day cooking, cleaning etc, rather not waste that time and have a more casual meal with better food.
We attend a huge thanksgiving pot luck and the array of food (and good company of all ages) is amazing. There is the usual roasted and fried Turkey plus game meats with traditional sides and desserts. However many people bring whatever they prefer to eat so there are also vegan dishes, pasta dishes, and many seafoods. Similarly, there are traditional thanksgiving desserts of apple, pumpkin and pecan pies plus whatever desserts people prefer such as fresh cookies, chocolate cakes, fruit etc. There will always be some people who prefer traditional foods and some who prefer other options - and the ideal is to allow everyone to eat and drink as they prefer while enjoying the spirit of the holiday - to be with family and friends giving thanks for blessings, sharing joys and commiserating about losses and painful stuff.
