A Toronto city councillor Josh Matlow had an event with the newly-elected mayor of Toronto, Olivia Chow. It was an event to fundraise to pay off campaign debts from the recent election. He's a municipal politician and the election had nothing at all to do with Israel-Palestine. But these protesters protested Matlow because he's a "Zionist." https://twitter.com/CIJAinfo/status/1727814927329460244 Kudos to former Toronto Mayor David Miller for calling them out: https://twitter.com/CarymaRules/status/1727480837208220156 Guess what about 99% of North American Jews support Israel's existence. Absolutely vile and ignorant behavior.
I dont know this person so i dont know if this was in any way justifiable (i.e. if he is actually a zionist and not merely a Jewish CanadiaN). However the crux is in your last paragraph, about Americans and especially Jewish Americans supporting Israel. And bu this i dont mean supporting the existence of Israel.but supporting Israel period, whatever it does including the occupation of the WB and the continuing (going on today) removal and dispossesion of Palestinians. Can you imaging in the US if a bunch of armed people attacked Iowa farmers to prevent them from harvesting their corn? And the police (actually the army) being there to protect the attackers and shoot any Iowa farmers who protest? This happens daily in the WB, with a Palestinian farmer even killed a few weeks ago by a settler in the Palestinian farmer’s olive grove. Israel would not be able to do this without its hold on American politicians, on both sides, and on the American public. Hold that is carefully cultivated with a scorched earth campaign of silencing any voice that is critical of Israel. You can publicly support settlers and there is no issue, but if you voice any doubt about Netanyhau’s government and its policies toward the Palestinians you are labeled an antisemite, there are calls for your job to be terminated and so on. If you are Jewish, then you must be a deranged self hating Jew. Attacking Jewish people is a crime and should be punished. But peacefully calling out public figures for their staunch support of Israel and the settlement enterprise should be allowed and is not disgusting
