Imagine how much this city would change if it locked up a mere 100 of the serially criminal—the mentally ill vagrants exposing themselves to passerby, assaulting preschool teachers, and selling drugs in broad daylight. The burden placed on social services agencies would lessen almost overnight. There would be no more tragedies making the national news; no more teachers visiting from Kentucky shot and killed in front of a metro station. But instead, our uniquely American brand of modern liberalism brand allows certain individuals to be free from law enforcement, up until the point where they seriously injure or kill someone (and sometimes even beyond that). What’s happening here is only happening because we allow it, and it won’t change, or come near anything close to the solution in El Salvador, until we decide enough is enough.
Most progressivism isn't liberal. Remember, liberal does not mean "supports leftist insanity de jour." Liberals like me support ensuring that the legal system isn't racist (or any other sort of ist) and them enforcing laws equally. Progressives want retribution for black people because of their white guilt so they change laws and policies so that black people aren't held responsible for their actions.
