I am looking for ideas for a weeklong trip with my husband, without our kids, to celebrate my 50th in May. I don’t want a beach or resort vacation. We love food and architecture and wandering through cities; charming small towns and beautiful landscapes are welcome. I don’t want to do a more adventure travel thing that it would be better to do with our teens. I am thinking probably Europe, though open to Central or South America. We don’t have that much time so probably would only be in one location, unless traveling between small towns. We love Paris and Rome but have been there many times, so that is not this trip. We have done a couple trips to Umbria and Tuscany before and will be in the Loire Valley to visit family on a different trip next year. We have been to Lisbon and London and Barcelona fairly recently, so not those. Some places we have not been for many years that are interesting to me as a base: Seville (and environs); Vienna (and maybe Salzburg?). I have never been to Germany, or the Netherlands or the Nordic countries or Hungary or Croatia, or lots of other places. And I have been very few places in the Americas (Belize, Costa Rica). What would you recommend for a grown-ups week in May?
