But, even beyond that, and even if nannies and the professionals who hired them made the same amount, most careers don't lend themselves to being out for years at a time. We'll have a nanny (or be in a nanny share) for seven years between our three kids. Most industries move forward pretty dramatically in that kind of time frame. I would no longer be relevant/employable in my line of work after a seven year break. Heck, even the childcare industry moves forward over that kind of time frame. Seven years ago, pediatricians were still telling parents to avoid allergens for babies and everyone loved the rock 'n play.

Plus, some people have the temperament to enjoy caring for children as their primary occupation. Many don't. Despite what you obviously believe, this doesn't immediately line up with gender. I enjoy my job. I love and enjoy my children. I would not enjoy being home with my children all day every day.

We live in a world of specialization. You don't pave your own roads or sew your own curtains or produce all the TV you watch. On a macro level, specialization increases efficiency.[/quote]
