I didn't like Fenty, but Gray is doing a LOUSY job of governing. He's been mayor for what, two years? Feels like 10, with all of the energy of a hot, languid July day. While there are a few bright spots, the bureaucracy is slowing down. There are lots of unfilled vacancies on DC boards and commissions. A constant drumbeat of scandals. Bring back Anthony Williams!
The scandals have nothing to do with Gray's governing. Here are some difference between Fenty and Gray: 1) Fenty had plenty of money to play with and was able to spend like crazy. Gray inherited a deficit and has had to deal with a declining economy (which is world-wide, not something he caused in DC); 2) Fenty has the Washington Post editorial board as a fan club. The same board is constantly critical of Gray. This affects many people's perception of their terms; As for Williams, everyone seems to be looking back at him with rose-colored glasses. He had is own ethics issues. And, as for campaigning, he was kicked off the frigging ballot because his petitions were illegal (involving one of the same guys involved with Grays shadow campaign). The fact that you have to reach to "unfilled vacancies on DC boards and commissions" as a short-coming of the Gray administration shows just how good we have it. There was a time when such a list would have been topped by 300-some murders per year and a lack of basic city services. Could Gray do better? Sure, all mayors could (or so their constituents think). I obviously wish he hadn't been involved in these campaign shenanigans. But, I still think he is doing a pretty good job of governing.
