U.S. News and World Report just released the latest edition of their annual high school rankings and Poolesville came out on top in both the MCPS list of high schools and the overall list for the state of Maryland: MCPS list: https://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/maryland/districts/montgomery-county-public-schools-104047 Maryland: https://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/search?state-urlname=maryland&ranked=true The W schools and B-CC round out the top 5, followed by Richard Montgomery, Northwest, Blake, and Blair in the top 10. The bottom 5 MCPS high schools include Sherwood, Paint Branch, Seneca Valley, Watkins Mill, Kennedy, and Gaithersburg. Of those 5, I was most surprised by Sherwood, which I thought was at least in the middle of the pack for MCPS high schools, so I don't know how it slid down so far.
SVHS has been great for my kid. Good teachers (mostly), good administrators, good building, good location, good range of academic and extracurricular opportunities, good group of friends. Why would anyone care about the US News and World Report rankings for high schools?
Of course. The thing you have to remember is that even the WORST MCPS high schools are still better than most high schools. So being in the bottom 5 doesn't mean it's an IRREDEEMABLY HORRIBLE school. My kid goes to Kennedy and I feel the same as you do about Seneca. But the rankings do reveal some useful information and insights on deficiencies and room for improvement. The fact that both Seneca and Kennedy have college readiness scores of 29 and 32 respectively mean they have some serious work to do in that area.
