It all depends.  We had our wood trim around all of our windows (have 42) repainted at least 8 years ago maybe 9, lost track.

The first guy we started with didn't want a crazy amount (a few thousand I think it was) but he started painting with very little actual prep.  When we asked him to clean, and sand the areas first, he balked.  We fortunately hadn't signed a contract with him so we parted ways with him after he refused.  The area he had started near our garage peeled within 6 months.

We then got from a referral at our local paint store who gave us 3 recs.   The first guy who charges the least must have heard through the grapevine what had happened with the first company so he cancelled on us but we didn't care b/c if that's what spooked him we knew he might also be a shoddy painter.  The second company asked for $14K but the paint job has held up.  The third was really crazy expensive (specialize in historic restorations) so we went with the 2nd company.[/quote]
