I think it is reasonable for hosts to ask guest to wear a certain style of clothing that is traditionally appropriate for an event ("Black tie"). I don't think it's OK to require guests to dress according to some My Special Day vision they have about everyone wearing a particular color. I think it's goofy to provide suggestions that aren't an actual dress code as though your loved ones don't know how to dress themselves, which is what "Black tie preferred" seems to be. Wear a dark suit or dinner jacket if you're a suit-wearer. Wear a nice dress -- something too festive/formal to wear court, if you need a guideline -- if you prefer dresses. [/quote]
